Caroline Reflects on Seminar Camp

Caroline returned from Seminar Camp in Italy and says, “Seminar was such a rewarding experience. We were able to set our own agenda and decide what we wanted to discuss. We had lots of interesting debates and explored topics such as feminism, 1st world intervention into 3rd world customs, and cultural stereotypes. It was a very cohesive group and we look forward to a reunion in the future.”

Our delegates held their National Nights here in Jacksonville! During their national night, the Swedes shared Swedish cuisine (Swedish meatballs, chocolate, smoked fish, and other foods), led Midsummer’s dances, kicked off an Abba dance party and shared fun facts about Sweden. During the Czech Republic national night, the delegates spoke about the strong history of their country, shared many tradtional foods (like potato pancakes, poppyseed cake, and Karlovy Vary spa wafers), and led a traditional folk dance.  Click here for online photo album for the Sweden Interchange. Click here for online photo album for the Czech Republic Interchange.

Did you know: The first Interchange was held in 1961. Interchange takes place in two ‘phases’ – your child joins a delegation that visits another country and is hosted there by a CISV family. Then in return you and your family host a child from the delegation from the country your child visited. Interchange exchanges give your whole family the chance to experience another culture and make new friends and to be part of your local CISV community.
The interchange delegates have been enjoying the sights and attractions of Florida! Groups visited Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Universal Studios, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp games, and enjoyed family weekend together!

 Step Up Camp Open Day

At Open Day, delegations sang their national anthem and shared fun facts about their country.  The Vietnam delegation shared a traditional dance while the Mexico delegation led a fun repeat-after-me energizer.  The Sweden delegation demonstrated the traditional “little frog” dance to celebrate the Midsummer festival, and the Austrians taught the Open Day crowd a typical Austrian song. Check out the photo gallery in the Florida Times Union and the chapter’s online Step Up Open Day photo album.

Did you know that Jonas, the leader of the Swedish delegation at our Jacksonville Step Up 2017, came to Village as an 11-year old at the same Jacksonville school location in 2002.  Eleanor Fails-Hayden was the Village director in 2002.  Eleanor, Jonas and Bob, who staffed that 2002 Village, reunited at the Open Day and visited the tree they planted at the school in 2002.  See the photo in  our chapter’s online Step Up Open Day photo album

Swedes at airport 2

Did you know the first Step Up was held in 1985. CISV’s Step Up program encourages young people to take a leading role in planning and organizing activities. The participants and their adult leaders use CISV’s peace education to guide the theme of the camp around which they plan activities, such as identity, democracy, or environmental protection.  Step Up delegations come from 9 countries and are comprised of 4 young people, 2 girls and 2 boys, who are accompanied by an adult leader. The camp is coordinated by adult staff.

Czech Republic and Sweden Interchange Delegations Enjoy First Week

The 10 delegates from Prague and 6 delegates from Sweden arrived in Jacksonville last Sunday to a great welcome from their American hosts.  All three countries – USA, Czech Republic and Sweden – went together to minicamp and participated in typical CISV activities.

Our Jacksonville delegates are going to “We the People” Village.  We the People is a concept that says by working as a group, the power of the individual is magnified. Anything can be achieved when we work in unison. We must stand up for ourselves, and act in a way that respects all members of society, and helps us grow together.

Portugal Village Underway

Our delegation left Jacksonville in time to arrive in Portugal for the start of the “This World is a Village” Village. The main CISV theme this year is Human Rights. That’s why it is important to be aware that, after all, This World is a Village, and everybody counts! We hope that our villagers leave the camp tolerant and aware of their  neighbors, wherever they go in the future!

This Year’s Theme & Travel Album

The theme of all CISV camps this year is Human Rights, a set of principles concerned with fairness and equality among people.  While Human Rights can be a challenging topic to get one’s head around, it’s also incredibly interesting and tremendously important. It’s an area that every Active Global Citizen should be aware of, and able to think critically about, whether you are aged 11 or 111.

In the next Summer Snapshot…

Our Step Up delegates arrive in Jacksonville June 28-June 30!
Our Village delegates head off to Lisbon, Portugal

TU: International visitors immersed in North Florida sustainability

Click here to view story from the July 29 issue of the Florida Times-Union.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH | They came to Northeast Florida to get their hands dirty.

During a whirlwind 18-day trip to learn about environmental initiatives, the 19 mostly young adults from Austria, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, Sweden, France, Portugal and Spain volunteered in a variety of ways. They built a bio-swale in Springfield, removed invasive plants at Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve and tested Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve water and sediment for marine debris and microplastic waste.

They also helped out at the Jacksonville Zoo and at two local nonprofits, learned all about the St. Johns River and land bank mitigation and Tuesday toured Gyo Greens in Ponte Vedra Beach, a small farming operation that combines traditional aquaculture with hydroponics.

“Interesting,” said Madalena Neves, 19, of Portugal, marveling at the end of the Gyo Greens tour, which included a microgreens tasting session. “I could stay here all day.”

But there were more places to go, including historic Camp Milton, where the group was to help improve the Rails to Trails pathway system. And there was more sustainability information to absorb.

The Northeast Florida visit was an International People’s Project hosted by nonprofit CISV Jacksonville, part of a worldwide volunteer organization that promotes peace, education and cross-cultural friendship. People’s Projects are designed by host cities in partnership with local organizations. They bring a group of volunteers from at least four different countries to work together on a community project along a specific theme. The local theme was exploring the environment and environmental initiatives.

Practices employed and lessons learned in one country, group members said, may benefit other countries or at least help start conversations.

Controlled burns, for instance, are used in U.S. forest management to reduce fuel buildup and decrease the likelihood of serious hotter fires. But Neves said there is no such concept in her home country of Portugal.

Experiences should be shared globally, said group member Brigitte Reisner of Austria.
This is the place where they meet and socialize; discussing each of their struggles with regards to around 30 minutes to be able to 45 devices viagra without prescription ahead of require in any sort of sex training. Sex therapy is like other viagra 100mg forms of intervention. These levitra without prescription muscles get an extra energy at that time and place.
“I have learned that everything is connected … everywhere,” she said.

Her husband, Johann Reisner, is a consulting engineer for agricultural engineering and water management in Austria. He said he was familiar with the global issue of microplastic waste — his outgoing emails contain the phrase “take care of microplastics” — and planned to suggest it as a topic to be studied by Engineers without Borders, of which he is a member.

Fannie Lawson of Sweden said sustainability practices should be applied worldwide.

“We have to, with what we buy, what we eat,” she said. “The whole earth is not only ours.”

At the Gyo Greens greenhouse, farm manager Jessie Berlinger had a full sustainability lesson plan ready. In aquaculture, waste produced by farmed fish or other aquatic animals supplies nutrients for plants grown hydroponically, which in turn purify the water. Less land and water is needed than in a traditional farming operation, she said, and since everything is recycled, nothing goes to waste.

Plant growth is rapid.

“Like magic,” she said, gesturing to containers of multi-colored microgreens, “Everything here will turn green this afternoon.”

Gyo Green’s specialty produce and microgreens are sold to 32 area restaurants and, except for the summer months, available to the public on a retail basis.

“We’re very busy,” she said.
